Famine

"Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD." Amos 8:11

Most apply this verse to our present age and culture. I am not so sure about that. A famine of bread and water would cause people to do anything they could to satisfy their hunger and thirst. They would go to whatever extreme was required to get something to eat or drink. If anything, our present culture is the opposite. The "hearing of the words of the Lord" is certainly not in demand in our churches, schools or government. The majority of the people with any power or influence are doing all they can to get rid of the "words of the Lord."

We have a plethora of bible translations, so man can find one that will say whatever he wants it to say. One thing we know for certain is that all these translations cannot be right. They can all be wrong, but they can't all be right! The shelves the average Christian book store are inundated with "Christian Psychology" books. What an oxymoron! All of psychology exalts mankind, not God or His Son, Jesus Christ. The subjects will major on self…self-esteem, self love and self improvement. The "self-esteem crowd" keep flying into face of God's word:

"Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind LET EACH ESTEEM OTHERS BETTER THAN THEMSELVES." Philippians 2:3 (caps mine)

We can also find numerous books on specific formulas on how to get the things we want from God. Alas, we find books on "how to" get God to heal you; "how to" manipulate God into improving our finances; "how to" cause God to grant our every want and wish. You would think these gurus are giving you the secret password to God's treasure chest.

If there ever was a time God's people should be hungering and thirsting for some old fashioned Bible preaching, it surely should be now. Yet that is not what we are seeing. Preaching is OUT, counseling and therapy are IN. Sin is not mentioned, and if it is, it is so generalized, it is anybody's guess.

The "regular church members" think nothing of a little adultery here and there. Cheating the government is accepted. Buying lottery tickets or playing the slots is alright as long as it doesn't take food from the children. Tobacco and alcohol is alright in moderation. Low cut blouses are fashionable and tattoos are okay. Homosexuality is an alternate lifestyle, not perversion. Sex education is important but the Bible is too extreme. We are being taught that we should be tolerant toward all ungodliness, but intolerant toward holiness and righteousness. The Bible way is archaic and out of date. God's creation cannot be taught in our schools, but the "not one fact in the whole curriculum" evolution is demanded by people who are supposed to be educated. The churches spend more money and effort on the young people, forgetting that the young people grow out of it!

"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." 1 Corinthians 13:11

How stupid is the person who thinks you can borrow your way out of debt? How are we possibly helping people by passing them when they fail? What is the end result of penalizing success and rewarding failure? We are a sports crazed nation, but you can kill the NFL, the American League, the National League, the NBA, the NHL in one season by taking the scoreboard down! If there are no losers, there are no winners.

"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" Mark 8:36

Evolution has no proof of any of its theories, yet man is determined to teach it to our youth. Socialism has always been a failure, yet man continues to demand it. Satan has always lied and man continues to believe him…as if the next time he might be right! The Bible introduced "church" and gave instructions for it, but man installs his own program, then wonders why it doesn't work.

As man grew "worse and worse" (2 Timothy 3:13,) we cut back on preaching services and Bible study. Instead of redoubling our efforts in prayer time, Bible memorization, visitation and rightly dividing the word of truth, we reduced them or cut them out entirely, then we wondered why our children left the church.

Jesus drew crowds by just telling the truth. His view on this was:

"But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." John 10:26-27

God's people, the sheep, long for His words. God's word keeps us from sin (Psalms 119:11). God's word will reach people where nothing else can (Hebrews 4:12.). God's word will cleanse us (Ephesians 5:26). God's word feeds us (Matthew 4:4.) God's sheep want to be fed. The goats want to be entertained.

Keep Looking Up!
