One of the descriptions given to the cartoon character, Superman, at the opening of his television program was that he was “faster than a speeding bullet.” Today Superman has a rival in the speed in which apostasy (a total departure of one’s faith and religion) is taking over churches, Christian institutions and ministries. What an unusual time in which we live. Many of the Bible believing churches are dying or shrinking fast. Others have sold out to a contemporary god, changed their name and format and keep asking for funds.
“For I am the Lord, I change not…” Malachi 3:6
“My son, fear thou the Lord and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change.” Proverbs 24:21
The Southern Baptist Convention, the largest evangelical denomination in the world, felt the need to pass a resolution that confirmed the Biblical concept of hell (Phoenix, AZ, 2011.) I bet that impressed God! They also face the dilemma of continued shrinking attendance and giving.
While we were in Oklahoma City, I read these headlines for Lifechurch (a local congregation,) TV goes ‘at the movies’ with ‘tron’-themed campus (Daily Oklahoman, 7-16-11.)
For years, many churches have been trying to compete with Hollywood and Las Vegas and they cannot do it. We have gotten away from feeding the sheep and are just entertaining the goats.
Many of our “so-called” evangelical leaders are supporting Islam more than Jesus Christ. They call it “Chrislam,” trying to find common ground between Christians and Muslims. You might as well spend time trying to find common ground between Satan and Jesus Christ. There is nothing in common between Allah and Jehovah God. You cannot bow to both.
“For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” Exodus 34:14
On the other hand, we have those who openly defy God’s words, like Tony Campolo, a proponent of the so-called “evangelical left” who claimed, “even if Muslims don’t convert, they are God’s people.”
“Recently over 300 prominent Christian leaders signed a letter issued by the Yale Center for Faith and Culture claiming that world peace is dependent on Muslims and Christians recognizing ‘Allah’ and ‘Yahweh’ as the same God,” says Joe Schimmel, senior pastor of Blessed Hope Chapel in Southern California. Some recognized names in evangelical circles that signed that letter are Brian McLaren, Rick Warren, Robert Schuller and Bill Hybels.
This week I received information that Campus Crusade For Christ is taking Christ out of its name. Obviously, this has created some negative response.
Let me quote one of the stupidest statements ever made; “We felt like our name was getting in the way of accomplishing our mission,” said Steve Sellers, the vice president for Campus Crusade, noting that the ministry will still be committed to “proclaiming Christ around the world.” Huh! What kind of oxymoron is that? Would you like to know what this is really about? It is about money…funding. Today’s church has gone “undercover” because they do not want to be closely affiliated with Jesus Christ: He is controversial and it may hurt donations.
“Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?” Matthew 15:12
God forbid that we should offend anyone. We are naming churches with unidentifiable names. We are removing any Bible terminology that might identify us. In many cases, we are even removing the word “church.” Who are we trying to sneak up on?
Please don’t give me that old song and dance, “We can reach more people that way.”
We are inundated with contemporary Obadiah’s who just hide and feed the prophets. At the same time, Obadiah the prophet, was helping Ahab hunt for grass (1 Kings 18:5-6.) What kind of prophet needs to be hid and fed? Were they just prophesying to each other?
God’s message hasn’t changed and God’s methods haven’t either. It is still prayer, Bible study and soul winning that is the foundation of any spiritually successful church.
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8
It doesn’t make any difference how many wires are strung up, they are worthless without God’s power. We have all of the modern technology, but no burden of sin, no repentance, no heartache for lost souls. This is the reason that our world, our nation, our churches and our families are headed to disaster “faster than a speeding bullet.” Keep Looking Up! Leland Maples
