Parents never have to send a child to lying school…they never have to teach children to say “Mine!” Much effort goes into teaching children to obey, to observe correct etiquette, be polite, etc. Why is it that obedience must be taught and disobedience is just natural? Take two young children, place them in the same room with one toy and see how well they share. What we have in the life of every human being is his total depravity. All of the old saints of God knew about it and believed it. My, things are a changing!
“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” Mark 7:21-23
Notice that Jesus listed thirteen things that originate in the heart of men. These sins are not caused by our environment, lack of education, financial conditions or cultural background. Every child of Adam’s race possesses them. Man does not contain a divine spark that develops into goodness if fanned by the wind of education and culture.
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9
How often we hear someone say that he/she has a good heart. Actually, the opposite is true. Man’s heart is deceitful…it lies to him! This is why all divorces started with “I love you.” Man’s heart, mine and yours, is more than just “bad,” it is “desperately wicked.” Man’s heart is so bad that God Almighty did not attempt to fix it. He gave us a new one! He called it the “new man” (Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10.) It must be new, not remodeled (2 Corinthians 5:17.)
We even have some of God’s children promoting the importance of man. Slogans like “God didn’t make no junk” or “You are made in God’s image” are somewhat misleading. These are half truths, which mean they are lies. God did not make man a sinner. God created Adam in His image (Genesis 1:26) and gave him a choice (Genesis 2:15-17.) Adam failed and caused sin and death to be passed unto all mankind. All descendants of Adam are in Adam’s likeness and image, not God’s.
“This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son IN HIS OWN LIKENESS, AFTER HIS IMAGE; and called his name Seth:” Genesis 5:1-3 (caps mine)
Man is not a noble character evolving toward heaven; he is a depraved sinner headed to hell. Psychology promotes man, not Jesus Christ. Man, left alone, with no intervention from God will spend eternity in hell. Man goes to hell for not believing in Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour (John 3:16-17.) Evolution claims mankind is moving onward and upward, but the facts are the opposite. In my time, I have seen the murder of the innocent become legalized in abortion. Murder is murder, whether you kill them in the womb or on the street?
What God called an “abomination” (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13) has become acceptable to the most cultured and educated of our time. Even “so called” Christians are bowing to the idolizing of man by writing books on loving ourselves, promoting our self-esteem and self-worth. Christ’s message was 180 degrees the other way:
“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, LET HIM DENY HIMSELF, and take up his cross, and follow me.” Matthew 16:24 (caps mine)
The prophet Isaiah said emphatically;
“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Isaiah 64:6
Man, at his best, is still filthy. The evolutionist says that man needs more time to develop. The eugenicist says that man needs better breeding. The sociologist says that man needs better environment; the educators say he needs more teaching to remove his ignorance and the psychologist says he needs to think better of himself, to realize his potential. All of them admit that man needs something. The problem is not that something must be added to man, but what man is…sinful!
Man will openly admit to imperfection…”I know I’m not perfect.” What he will not admit to is his filthiness. The prophet said that the best man could offer was “filthy rags.” The Psalmist stated:
“They are all gone aside, they are all together become FILTHY: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” Psalms 14:3 (caps mine)
Paul spoke often about man’s sinfulness. Note his statements in Romans 3:
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: and the way of peace have they not known.” Romans 3:10-17
You will notice that this is a composite quote from Psalms and Isaiah. Even after Paul’s conversion, he realized that in his flesh “dwelleth no good thing.” (Romans 7:18) All of this talk about man being so good and beneficial to the world is just that, talk. In Romans 1:28-31, Paul listed 23 sins that are common to man.
Deuteronomy 28:54-57 tells us that the most delicate and tender man or woman will eat their own children when put in dire straits! How’s that for mankind’s goodness?
Man is constantly talking about peace, but the truth of the matter, there will be no lasting peace until Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, sits on David’s throne in Jerusalem and rules the earth with a rod of iron. God never shows tolerance for any other religion! All of the world’s religions will one day bow to Jesus Christ (Philippians 2:10.) They will not bow to Allah or Buddha or Mary or Tao. There will be no joint religions or coexistence of various beliefs.
Only One went to Calvary and only One will reign. Without Him we can do “nothing.” (John 15:5) Keep Looking Up! Leland Maples
