Hermeneutics-Part5

The lesson on November 29, 2020 was part 5 of the "Hermeneutics" study.  This weeks focus was on Typology.  The typology in scripture are examples for us to learn.  There are many types in the testimony of Jesus Christ whereas it says in John 5:39 KJV "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."  We see in all of the Old Testament (The Law = Torah; The Prophets = Nebiim; The Psalms = Kethubim) that Jesus is seen in types and shadows. In the New Testament we see other examples: Hebrews 4:11 Israel an example of unbelief; Hebrews...

Hermeneutics-Part4

The lesson on November 22, 2020 was part 4 of the "Hermenuetics" study.  The focus this week was on Parables and how it is important to understand why Jesus used them and for what purpose they served.  Wayne spent the first ten minutes of this lesson to remind us of the problem we have in America when we have two parties not identifying the real problem, which is a spiritual problem with America.  Until we fix that, we will not solve our national problems.  We then looked at the word "Parable" and was reminded of the Greek "παραβολή" words that mean "throwing along side".   Parables were...

Hermeneutics-Part3

The lesson on November 15, 2020 was part 3 of the "Hermeneutics" study and focused on using a Lexicon in your studies.  A lexicon compares usage of words to help determine it's meanings.  A lexicon does not define words for every particular context but gives categorical summaries which are helpful in looking for directions of study and possibilities.  Wayne used this lesson to show examples of the synonymous words for "other" and "another".  In the Greek, allos = another of the same kind (denoting numerical distinction).  Heteros = another of a different kind (usually denoting generic...

Hermeneutics-Part2

The lesson on November 8, 2020 was part 2 of the "Hermeneutics" study. In this lesson we learn about figures of speech used in the Bible. Wayne refers to the book "Figures of Speech Used in the Bible" by E.W. Bullinger.  In this book and also in the appendices of the Companion Bible, it explains that figures of speech are used to make speech interesting and they are used true to literary.  The Greeks studied figures of speech even before Christianity and used the term "schmema" to describe the form or shape of the words.  The Romans also studied it and used the word "figura" to describe...

Hermeneutics-Part1

The lesson on November 1, 2020 was part 1 of the "Hermeneutics" study.  In this opening lesson, Wayne provides us some insights into the word and how the Greeks believed some of the myth of Hermes in that he could quickly deliver the message between the gods having winged sandals.  We were introduced to where the Greek word shows up in scripture.  There were three Greek words used to describe interpret and we convered some of the scriptures where it was used. We also used this with the two disciples on the way to Emmaus.  With proper interpretation we receive the proper understanding of...

John's Gospel - Summary - Part 3

The lesson on October 25, 2020 was part 3 of the summary of "John's Gospel" study and completed the study.  In wrapping up what we learned about the uniqueness of this Gospel apart from Matthew, Mark and Luke was that it was the unique ministry given to John by Christ which really was a two-fold ministry like the Apostle Paul had.  Paul had the two-fold ministry the to Jew first and then the Gentile.(during Acts).  John had the two-fold ministry to the "guests" to the marriage supper of the lamb (with no adoption) and "the world" after Acts 28.  We also learned how Jesus Christ told Peter...

John's Gospel - Summary - Part 2

The lesson on October 18, 2020 was part 2 of the summary on "John's Gospel" study.  In part two of this summary Wayne continues to share what we learned through this study in John's Gospel and it included some clarity Wayne had not seen before. He wants to clarify what are the big take away from this study.  One of which is the adoption not found in John! We learned of these adoptions and how it is different than the way it is used in scripture.  It means the Father has the right to declare how one might be placed to be  a chief inheritor. John does not generally refer to the believer as “...

John's Gospel - Summary - Part 1

The lesson on October 11, 2020 was part 1 of the summary of "John's Gospel" study.  Today's lesson started the summary of what we have learned by going through John's Gospel.  Wayne provided a summary of last weeks lesson where there are two closings to John, chapter 20 and chapter 21 being a post script where Jesus addressed certain issues with Peter because of his three denials.  Wayne spent some time explaining why Jesus took time to address Peter but then started to summarize how John's Gospel is addressed to the world since Israel was considered Lo-Ammi (not my people).   These people...

John's Gospel - Part 15 - 8th Sign

The lesson on October 4, 2020 was part 15 covering the 8th sign of "John's Gospel" study.  The focus in today's lesson was on the 8th sign in John's gospel which corresponds with the first sign.  The structure of John has taken us through seven signs which corresponds to the number of completion and the number 8 reflects the new beginning. John chapter 21 is the second end of this book and it represents a manifestation of himself after the resurrection.  The structure of chapter 21 is the eighth sign in verses 21:1-14, then questions and commands to Peter from verses 21:15-19, then it goes...

John's Gospel - Part 15

The lesson on September 27, 2020 was part 15 of "John's Gospel" study. In this lesson, we learn of the three trials of Jesus and how they broke all the laws of the time, Jewish and Roman for the sake of "expediency". The lamb of God must be without blemish as he paid for our sins. The Chief Priests Annas and Caiaphas with Pilate felt it was expedient to kill Jesus for the sake of keeping the peace even though Pilate declared him an innocent man. The trial of Christ under Hebrew and Roman law was full of illegalities with high irregularities. The critical aspect of these fake trials was the...
