Christmas is here again.! I love this time of year and…yes…I am familiar with all of the problems, both real and imagined. There is the commercialism, the falsehoods presented for facts and the multitudes who pay no attention to Christ’s birth.
No, I do not believe that the tree in Jeremiah 10:1-5 is the Christmas tree. I have never seen a tree with real “silver and gold,” only silver and gold tinsel, and if you think they are the same, I would like to trade some silver and gold tinsel for your gold and silver.
No, I do not believe that S-a-n-t-a is an acronym for Satan. In all of my years, I have never heard one person claim that the reason that he used drugs or alcohol was because his parents lied to him about Santa Claus.
No, I do not believe that Jesus was born on December 25th. Even a cursory reading of
“shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night” (Luke 2:8) would reveal that Christ wasn’t born in the dead of winter. It wasn’t Christ’s birth that was a miracle, it was His conception:
“But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:20-21
“And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.” Luke 1:30-31
No, I do not think the wise men had anything to do with Christ’s birth. They visited Him, not as the “Babe…in the manger” (Luke 2:12,) like the shepherds, but as a “young Child” in a “house” (Matthew 2:11.)
No, I do not think that Christmas day has any spiritual significance for Christians, as per Paul’s instructions about any and all days:
“One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.” Romans 14:5-6
There are many negatives to this time of year. With all of the family get-togethers, it also highlights heartaches, separations, bereavements and losses. There is only one thing that thrills me about this holiday and it far outweighs all of the downside.
Let me tell you what thrills me about this holiday. All over our planet, all the urban people and all the rural people will be made aware that God sent His Son to die and pay for our sins. All of the advanced culture along with the primitive culture will come to know that God sent a Saviour for us. A religion that has spent the year saying that God had no Son, will hear that He, indeed, did have a Son and that He gave Him for us. A religion that spent the year hearing that men are only reincarnated to some lesser animal, will hear that truth that God prepares men for heaven. The men who claim there is no God at all, will hear of joy and peace that only the Creator of all men can bring. The Answer to all of life’s problems, here and hereafter, arrived in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago and was announced to some shepherds doing their job. An angel of the Lord appeared and announced:
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”
Luke 2:11
Did you get that? A “SAVIOUR.” Not a manager; not a president; not a leader; not a captain; not a teacher; not an advisor; not a counselor; not a healer; not a reformer; not a king and not a keeper. What a title! Saviour! Here is what that title denotes:
1. Saviour denotes the dire need for salvation.
2. Saviour denotes an inability to save ourselves. All intellectually honest people admit that inability.
3. Saviour denotes His ability to save. No other God professes to save.
Every time I hear a Christmas carol, I think about that night in Bethlehem.
Every time I see a wrapped gift, I think about how God’s Gift was wrapped in swaddling clothes.
Every time I think about “giving,” I think about:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
How can you not love Christmas?
