Thanksgiving is here again and many are saying that it seems that every day we have less and less for which to be thankful. As we look around us we see problems and perversions engulfing us. Everywhere we turn we can see those deliberately destroying our nation and for what it once stood. Biblical principles and morals are passé, while perversion triumphs. We are repeating the days of Isaiah:
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” Isaiah 5:20
Our unborn babies are butchered for profit and the Pope is concerned about climate change!
Our elected officials are available to the highest bidder and our preachers don’t want to offend anyone. As Micah the prophet said of Israel:
“The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money…” Micah 3:11
Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, saw his nation rebel against God as we see America doing, and he cried:
“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” Lamentations 3:22
In Paul’s first epistle, he urged those in Thessalonica to:
“In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18
God’s people can give thanks. They can give thanks in 2015. They can give thanks when Satan runs roughshod over men in general…God’s people can give thanks! Regardless of what Obama does, regardless of who wins the election, regardless of hurricanes in the Gulf…I’m going to glory!
“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” Colossians 3:4
The first time that the Bible records anyone giving thanks is David after his victory over his enemies and Saul:
“Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.” 2 Samuel 22:50
David was a man of war. He knew what it was like to have enemies. He understood that those of his own household would kill him. He knew heartaches and disappointments, but he also knew His God. Note how often David remembered and recited God’s mercies:
“Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever. Psalms 106:1
“O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever.” Psalms 107:1
“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth forever.” Psalms 118:1
“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever.” Psalms 118:29
“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever.” Psalms 136:1
“O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth forever.” Psalms 136:2
“O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth forever.” Psalms 136:3
“O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth forever.” Psalms 136:26
Eight times the man whom God said was a man after His own heart reminds us of God’s mercies.
Do not despair, victory is coming!
“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” 2 Corinthians 9:15
He has given us Jesus Christ for our sins and because of Jesus, we win!
“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57
It is also interesting to note the last mention of giving of thanks in the Bible:
“Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.” Revelation 11:17
