The Psalmist said:
" He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with Him." Psalms 126:6
This is a long time quoted verse regarding soul winning. It is a promise, a challenge and instruction. It matches the last book that Paul wrote. His last instructions to Timothy were:
"…do the work of an evangelist…" 2 Timothy 4:5
Once we are saved, we are instructed to labor at getting others saved. The natural response of a person who has just been saved is to want to get others saved, friends, loved ones and family.
Notice the instructions of the Psalmist:
"He that goeth forth…" This takes effort. This takes some "get up and go." He did not say to wait for the crowd or inquirers. It is our responsibility to "go."
He also told us how we should go… weeping. This gives us some idea of the seriousness of the task. Too long we have tried to make serving the Lord, fun! Some have tried to make church fun! We are engaged in a life and death business. We never read of Jesus laughing, telling jokes or kidding the disciples. Paul wrote:
"Though he were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered." Hebrews 5:8
We are not on a frivolous mission. It was with a heavy heart that Jesus said:
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!" Matthew 23:37
The right way according to the Psalmist was to go, weeping, "sowing precious seed." There is no doubt what "precious seed" is.
"Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God." Luke 8:11
In scripture, seed is never money, good deeds or examples. Note the parables of Matthew 13. Seed is always God's word. That is the only thing we have to sow. God's word is the only seed that will save a soul.
"Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls." James 1:21
God said His word would not return void:
"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55:11
Here is the promise and the pay off. "…shall doubtless come again rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him."
Will everyone accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour? No, but some will. People speak of Noah preaching 120 years and not seeing anyone saved, but that is not true. There were three sons and daughters-in-law that got on the ark with him. We do not know how many people responded to Noah's message and died during that 120 year period. The Psalmist said, "…will doubtless…" We are to keep doing it like God said to do it and He will take care of the results.
"So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase." 1 Corinthians 3:7
You and I are just to do what He says. We cannot save anyone any way, only God can do that. All we can do is obey Him.
Notice that if we go, weeping, sowing God's word, we will return "rejoicing." This is one of the great attributes of God's children; they always end better than they started.
"For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." Romans 8:18
Whatever you may be going through today…if you are God's child, better times are coming. However your heart may be breaking today…if you are God's child, better times are coming. However dark the future may appear…if you are God's child, better times are coming. Whatever your loss today…if you are God's child, better times are coming.
Keep Looking Up!
