Webster’s 1828 Dictionary

Noah Webster’s publication, An American Dictionary of the English Language, is an important work for many modern readers because it is contemporary with the American Constitution. As a reference tool it is invaluable to anyone studying the national documents and literature of the period. It will help the reader understand the meaning of words that may have changed with the passage of time.

Many of Noah Webster’s word definitions contain references to the King James Bible which are linked to the Bible itself in this digital format. Many definitions are linked to other words within the dictionary to make it faster and easier to use.

This online edition has been carefully prepared in a proprietary format. All the words, definitions and examples have been preserved, but the explanations of word origins have been omitted to make using the data more accessible. We have omitted Webster’s lengthy technical introduction for the same reason. Scripture references have been standardized in a modern format, and many abbreviations have been expanded for ease in understanding.
